Ready to transform your website? Grab a ruler!
How 90-seconds and 5-feet could be the key to a great website.
We’re all busy, and no one is quite as busy as the person you’re trying to get to read your website.
But, before we get to them, let’s talk about your site. Did you know:
An estimated 57% of a visitor’s time is spent on the first section of a website. A staggering 74% of the view time is spent in the first two scrolls.
Surprising, right? But, think about your own reading habits (if we can call them that) on the web. Do you scroll or do you dive in?
That’s what I thought, but don’t worry! There’s a simple test for you to start getting answers and improve your website.
Give your website the “5-foot test”
This test is something you can do in about 90 seconds. Ready? All you do is:
Go to your website.
Stand up (no, really, stand up!) and step back 5 steps.
Note what you see: take in the biggest text and the biggest image on the page.
If the biggest text doesn’t speak to your ideal client’s pain: you’ve missed. If there isn’t a button for them to DO SOMETHING about that big pain (ideally with some financial reward for you): you’ve missed. If your images don’t show them or resonate with them: you’ve missed.
That’s the 5-foot test.
Why the 5-foot test is important
When you are sitting just a few feet from your own website, you’re concentrating so much on what you’re saying.
The 5-foot test takes that wordsmithing away. Instead, you see what your browsers see and people are impatient on the internet!
We want ultimate satisfaction! Immediately (if not sooner)!
So, if your site doesn’t grab you from 5 feet, it’s not gonna grab most prospects.
What to do to fix this
If you’ve found something you don’t quite like, fixes are within reach! It all boils down to:
Don’t make anyone read a novel: no one has time, make the big text say the thing that makes them stop dead and say “Oh my goodness! I’ve been looking for just this!”
Scream about what you do: your clients have big problems, you have BIG answers, make that H1 text (the biggest text on your website) high-impact, speak right to them.
Give ‘em a button: now that you have their attention, give them something to do, IMMEDIATELY. It’s amazing how many businesses hide the “next step” button.
Sadly, no one is going to break into your house after tracking you down and give you money. The speed of how we consume online has only increased, so don’t make anyone think.
The moment they pause to think is the moment they may also rationalize not buying your services.
Be loud and proud about what you do and don’t hide it. Make your biggest text punchy by anticipating what your audience needs in the first place and the button a quick solution to their pain.
Happy squinting!
